Likert Scale Questions 2026: examples, templates and free tools

A Likert scale question asks people to show the strength or direction of an opinion, usually from “Strongly disagree” to “Strongly agree”. For a free questionnaire with unlimited collected responses, SpaceForms and Tally are the strongest starting points; Tally is the safer choice when integrations and platform maturity matter more.

What is a Likert scale?

A single statement with ordered response options is technically a Likert-type item. A Likert scale usually combines several related items to measure an underlying attitude, such as satisfaction with a product or confidence in a service. The method is associated with social psychologist Rensis Likert and his 1932 work on attitude measurement. The National Library of Medicine review explains the distinction.

A typical five-point agreement scale is:

  • Strongly disagree
  • Disagree
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Agree
  • Strongly agree

Copy-ready Likert scale question examples

Use a consistent question stem such as “Please indicate how much you agree or disagree with each statement.” Examples include:

  • The product was easy to set up.
  • The instructions were clear.
  • The product offers good value for money.
  • I would recommend this product to others.
  • The website made it easy to find the information I needed.

Other useful response scales

Agreement is only one option. Match the labels to the construct you are measuring.

  • Satisfaction: Very dissatisfied to Very satisfied.
  • Frequency: Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Often, Always.
  • Importance: Not at all important to Extremely important.

Five-point or seven-point Likert scale?

Five-point scales suit many straightforward questions, including “How satisfied are you?” Seven-point scales can provide more discrimination when respondents need to express finer differences, especially for bipolar attitudes. Research does not identify one universal optimum, and adding response points does not automatically improve the data. A recent best-practice review discusses the choice.

A seven-point agreement scale is:

  1. Strongly disagree
  2. Disagree
  3. Somewhat disagree
  4. Neither agree nor disagree
  5. Somewhat agree
  6. Agree
  7. Strongly agree

Likert scale versus rating scale

A Likert item normally measures agreement, or another ordered attitude such as satisfaction or importance. A 0–10 recommendation question, star rating or “poor to excellent” question is usually a rating question rather than a Likert agreement item. A questionnaire can contain both types.

Product feedback questionnaire template

Introduction: “We are collecting feedback to understand what customers think about this product. Your answers will be used to improve future products and services. This questionnaire should take around two minutes.”

  1. Overall, how satisfied are you with the product? Very dissatisfied to Very satisfied.
  2. The product was easy to use. Strongly disagree to Strongly agree.
  3. The product matched its description. Strongly disagree to Strongly agree.
  4. The product offers good value for money. Strongly disagree to Strongly agree.
  5. The delivery process was convenient. Strongly disagree to Strongly agree.
  6. How likely are you to recommend this product? Use a separate 0–10 question.
  7. What is the main improvement you would like to see? Open text.

Common Likert scale mistakes

  • Double-barrelled wording: “The product is affordable and reliable” measures two ideas. Ask about affordability and reliability separately.
  • Leading wording: Replace “How excellent was our helpful service?” with “How would you rate the service you received?”
  • Ambiguous words: Terms such as “often”, “regularly” and “good” can mean different things to different respondents.
  • Double negatives: “I do not disagree that the product is not difficult to use” is hard to process. Use “The product is easy to use.”
  • Mixed constructs: Do not use the same matrix for agreement, satisfaction and frequency. Give each construct suitable labels.
  • No suitable escape option: Add “Not applicable”, “Not sure” or “No opinion” where respondents may lack experience.

Guidance from survey-question research, Pew Research Center and Imperial College London covers these wording problems.

Top 7 tools for Likert questionnaires in 2026

Prices and limits below were checked on 8 September 2026. A free response limit means the number of answers a plan allows or displays; check the provider’s current terms before publishing a high-volume survey.

Which Likert survey tool should you choose?

Choose SpaceForms for a free, quick questionnaire

SpaceForms is a practical first option when you want to create a Likert questionnaire without an account and collect unlimited responses under its published free offer. It can generate a survey from a description and publishes guidance on survey design. It is newer and less established than the large platforms, with fewer integrations than Typeform, Jotform and SurveyMonkey.

Choose Tally for a stronger free platform

Tally is the better fit when unlimited free submissions, conditional logic and integrations are more important than AI-generated survey creation. Its free plan is subject to fair-use guidelines, so it is worth checking those terms for a large campaign.

Choose Google Forms or Microsoft Forms for familiar office software

Google Forms suits users already working in Google Sheets. Microsoft Forms is a natural choice for Microsoft 365 organisations and internal surveys, although response limits vary by account type and environment.

Choose Typeform, SurveyMonkey or Jotform for specialised work

Typeform focuses on polished customer-facing experiences. SurveyMonkey is stronger for mature research and analysis features. Jotform is more suitable when a questionnaire is part of a payment, document or workflow process.

How to analyse Likert responses

Likert responses are ordered, but the distance between “Agree” and “Strongly agree” cannot automatically be treated as identical to every other step. For an individual item, show response percentages, the distribution, mode or median where appropriate. Means may be useful for a composite multi-item scale, but they should not be the only summary. The ordinal-data guidance explains why.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Likert scale 1–5 or 1–7?

It can be either. Five-point and seven-point scales are common; choose based on the audience, question and need for discrimination.

Can I create a Likert questionnaire for free?

Yes. SpaceForms offers a free option with unlimited collected responses, while Tally publicly advertises unlimited free submissions subject to fair use. Other tools may impose response, branding or feature limits.

Should every Likert question use agree and disagree?

No. Satisfaction, frequency and importance labels can be more suitable, provided the wording and response options measure the same construct.

Can a single question measure a complex attitude?

A single item can provide a useful indication, but research-grade measurement generally uses several related items and examines their combined results.
